I first saw The Lost Boys when I was nine on its TV premier and I'll admit it scared me badly. In fact, very badly. But when I finally got the courage to watch it again a couple of years later I thought "Woah. this film's actually quite amazing. Of all those vampire films made in the 80's (including Fright Night, Near Dark, Vamp) The Lost Boys stands out as the best of them. It's also the best vampire film ever, full stop. The reason I love this film so much is the unsettling, creepy atmosphere delivered by director Joel Schumacher who sets the mood perfectly from the very start. Schumacher puts some danger and excitement back into the genre, and the first hour of the film is extremely well directed.
It's got a terrific, exciting story, involving brothers Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam (Corey Haim) moving with their mother (Dianne Wiest) to the coastal town of Santa Carla, which is notorious for being the "Murder Capital of the World. This doesn't stop the brothers going out to the local amusement park that night, where they get a taste of the town's nightlife. It's not long before Michael falls for the wrong girl and he gets caught up with the dangerous Lost Boys,a group of vampire bikers led by David (Kiefer Sutherland) who gets Michael to join his friends by making him drink a very suspicious looking drink that could be blood (Of course it is. Soon after Michael starts to become one of the undead, and its up to Sam to work out what to do.
That's enough of the story, though. I've seen this film more than any other and I still can't get enough of it. In fact, it's almost perfect. Certain scenes, such as those at the amusement park, the cave, the train bridge and the beach are truly excellent, complimented by the brilliant use of music, lighting and camerawork. There's just one flaw: after the tremendous, suspenseful build up, I for one found the initial spectacle of the big house-bound booby-trap conclusion a little disappointing after a while, as Schumacher ditches the interesting dramatic conflicts of the main characters in exchange for non-stop special effects and action, which is well staged in its own right, but in my opinion seems like a bit of a cop-out. Still, what preceeds this is absolutely superb stuff, helped mainly by Sutherland's excellent performance. He delivers the best performance in the film, and is undoubtedly the best screen vampire ever with his scary and charismatic presence. Overall, The Lost Boys is first-rate entertainment and one of those films that can be watched many, many times. One of the quintessential films of the 80's.
